What is Thai Food? It is very unique combination of meats, vegetables, herbs / spices / seasonings and sauces; cooked in a wok over intense heat, cooking the food fast, preventing moisture loss and sealing in the flavor. Many of the herbs and spices used in Thai cooking are claimed to possess a cure for most common medical problems.
Also considered a "cult food"; much praised and sought after by discriminating diners and Thai food enthusiasts. Not many years ago, the only place to find good Thai food was Indonesia or larger US cities, with few small Thai restaurants. Although that has changed today with the many available Thai restaurants, still our favorite places are the street vendors in Bangkok, Thailand, and other communities around Thailand. "Eating on the street" in Thailand is quite an experience, the food is prepared and cook on a cart right in front of the customer. Spices and herbs used in Thai cooking are often said to have beneficial medicinal properties. Thai cuisine is known for its blend of
fundamental flavors in each dish -- hot (spicy), sour,
sweet, salty and bitter. One of the important ingredients is nam pla
(Thai น้ำปลา), a very aromatic and strong tasting fish sauce made from dried
anchovies which have been fermented in brine. |
